The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is one of the primary instruments used by the European Union to combat greenhouse gas emissions. Implemented since 2005, the EU ETS is the world’s largest emissions trading system.
The system operates as follows: participating companies are subject to a limit on CO2 emissions. If they exceed this limit, they must acquire additional emission allowances or purchase emission certificates from other companies that may exceed their own limits.
The system aims to reduce emissions and plays an encouraging role in motivating companies to adopt more sustainable practices. The prices of emission allowances are determined by the market, providing economic incentives for emission reduction.
The EU ETS has undergone several changes since its inception, with the goal of enhancing its effectiveness. It has also expanded to cover more sectors and apply to more member states.
QMSCERT is accredited for the verification of greenhouse gas emissions based on the requirements of ELOT EN ISO 14065:2013, Executive EU Regulation 2018/2067 (replacing Regulation 600/2012), and voluntary programs for quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas emissions according to ISO 14064-1, with accreditation number 1289. It is a recognized body according to joint decisions Φ.01.2/56790/ΔΠΠ1828/31.5.2016 by the Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Economy, Development, and Tourism with protocol number 37354-08-04-2022.
